In an interview with the unofficial Dave Matthews Band Web site nancies.org, Mr. Batson played down the notion that this was a radical shift for the group. But a glance at the liner notes shows the extent of his influence: he plays on all but two songs and gets a co-writing credit on all but one.

This throw-away line from the review annoyed me:
“Then came another twist: “Some Devil,” the disappointing 2003 solo album from Mr. Matthews.”
Disappointing? To who? I thought it was a strong album and didn’t realize that conventional wisdom had concluded otherwise.

The reviews from both publications and fans were very positive. I read very few lukewarm reviews, and no negative reviews that I recall. While I don’t doubt that the author of that New York Times piece didn’t favor the album, she’d definitely be in the minority, among listeners and reviewers alike.
